Cēsis is one of the oldest towns in Latvia, about an hour and a half from Riga. Its castle was the residence of the Master of the Livonian Order, and it is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the country.
Visitors climb the dark West Tower with a candle lantern, as people did centuries ago. Next to the ruins stands the New Castle, a later manor house with a museum and a view from its tower over the old town.
The old town around St John’s Church still keeps its medieval street plan, with cobbled lanes and small cafés. On the way back to Riga the driver stops in Sigulda, where you can choose between:
- Turaida Castle and Gūtmaņa Cave;
- the cable car over the Gauja;
- the sandstone cliffs of the Gauja valley.

How much does the Cēsis & Sigulda trip cost?
Prices are per vehicle, not per person: Standard Car (Volvo V60 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, 3 passengers) from €250, Standard Van (Opel Zafira Life, 7 passengers) from €300 and Premium Van (Mercedes-Benz V-Class, 6 passengers) from €350.
Where does the driver pick us up?
At the address you enter when booking - a hotel, an apartment or the airport - and you are brought back there unless you choose a different drop-off. If you are picked up at the airport, add your flight number and the driver follows your landing time.
How many people can travel?
Passengers per vehicle: Standard Car 3, Standard Van 7, Premium Van 6. Bigger groups book more than one vehicle - the booking form works out how many. For up to 19 passengers in one vehicle, ask for the Large Van (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): its price is on request and it needs at least 3 days’ notice.
How do I pay?
Online by card when you book, through Stripe’s secure checkout. Companies can add their company name and VAT number for the invoice.
Is the castle tower suitable for children?
Yes, children usually love the lantern walk. The stairs in the West Tower are steep and narrow, so small children need a hand, and it is not suitable for anyone who cannot climb stairs.
How long do we spend in Cēsis?
About two to three hours: enough for the castle, the New Castle tower and a walk through the old town with lunch. The rest of the day is the drive and the stop in Sigulda.
