Riga and Vilnius are 294 km apart. With a private transfer the drive takes about three and a half hours door to door, but most of our guests use it to see something on the way. Here is how the route works and how to plan the day.

The route

From Riga the E67 heads south to Bauska. It crosses into Lithuania at Grenctāle and Saločiai, then continues to Panevėžys. From Panevėžys the A2 motorway runs straight into Vilnius. It is one of the easiest long drives in the Baltics: a good road, little traffic outside the city edges, and no border control inside Schengen. Carry a passport or ID card all the same.

How long to plan for

Rundāle and Trakaiabout 4 h3-3.5 h7-7.5 h
Rundāle, Hill of Crosses and Trakaiabout 5 h4-4.5 h9-10 h

The Hill of Crosses is the stop that costs the most time, because it sits west of the direct road near Šiauliai. If you want all four sights, leave Riga around 8:00.

Stops on the way

  • Bauska Castle, 65 km from Riga, where the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers meet.
  • Rundāle Palace, 12 km further, Rastrelli’s Baroque residence for the Dukes of Courland.
  • The Hill of Crosses, north of Šiauliai, with well over 100,000 crosses.
  • Trakai Island Castle on Lake Galvė, 28 km before Vilnius, a good place for lunch.

Arriving in Vilnius

The driver drops you at the door: a hotel in the Old Town, an apartment, Vilnius Airport (about 6 km south of the centre) or the railway station. The Old Town has some narrow, restricted streets, so for some hotels the driver stops at the nearest point a car can reach and helps you with the luggage.

If you are flying out of Vilnius, plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure. Trakai is only 30 minutes from the airport, so it is the easiest stop to fit before a flight.

Choosing the vehicle

For one to three people with normal luggage a car is enough. For four or more, or for anyone travelling with large suitcases, choose the Opel Zafira Life (seven seats) or the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (six seats). Groups of up to 19 can travel in the Sprinter, which needs at least three days’ notice.

Price and booking

Prices are for the whole vehicle, not per person. A direct transfer without stops costs from €345 for a car with up to three passengers, booked in the booking form. The trip with stops starts from €415 for a car with up to three passengers, including the shortest stop. It runs at the same price from Vilnius to Riga. See the Riga - Vilnius trip

Frequently asked questions

Can you pick us up at Vilnius Airport and drive us to Riga?

Yes. The driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, just as at Riga Airport.

Can we go on to Kaunas instead of Vilnius?

Yes. Kaunas is about 100 km west of Vilnius. Write to us and we will price the route you have in mind.

Can we eat in the car?

Snacks and drinks are fine. For a proper lunch, Trakai or Bauska are the natural stops.
