A private transfer between Riga and Tallinn is a 309 km drive on the Via Baltica, but the questions we get are rarely about the distance. People want to know how to time a ferry, whether a lunch stop fits, what happens with six suitcases and a pram, and whether the driver waits. This guide answers them from the point of view of the drivers who do the route every week.
The route and the border
From Riga the E67 runs north along the Gulf of Riga through Saulkrasti and Salacgrīva. It crosses into Estonia between Ainaži and Ikla and continues through Pärnu to Tallinn. Without stops the drive takes a little over four hours.
Latvia and Estonia are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no passport control at the border. Every passenger should still carry a passport or national ID card, because random checks do happen.
How long to plan for
| Plan | Driving | Time at stops | Door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight through | about 4 h 10 min | one short break | about 4.5 h |
| Lunch in Pärnu | about 4 h 10 min | 1.5-2 h | 6-6.5 h |
| Sigulda, Turaida and Pärnu | about 5 h 10 min | 3-3.5 h | 8.5-9 h |
The extra hour on the last plan is the detour inland to the Gauja valley. The stops are optional, and you decide on the day how long to stay at each.
Ferries, flights and meetings in Tallinn
Most of our Riga - Tallinn passengers continue somewhere, so the arrival time matters more than the departure time. Tell us what you need to catch and we plan backwards from it.
- Helsinki ferries leave from two terminals. Tallink sails from D-terminal and Viking Line and Eckerö Line from A-terminal. We aim to drop you about an hour before the sailing.
- Tallinn Airport is about 4 km from the city centre. For an evening flight, a stop in Pärnu still fits if you leave Riga in the morning.
- For a meeting, give us the address and the start time. The driver allows for traffic on the Tallinn ring road.
Choosing the vehicle
Luggage decides more often than the number of people. If everyone has a large suitcase, a van is the better choice even for three or four passengers.
| Group | Vehicle | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 people | Volvo V60 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class | the simplest option for couples and business travellers |
| up to 7 people | Opel Zafira Life | room for a pram or a bike box |
| up to 6 people | Mercedes-Benz V-Class | face-to-face seating, good for working on the way |
| up to 19 people | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter | on request, at least 3 days’ notice |
Stops that work on this route
- Sigulda and Turaida Castle in the Gauja valley: about an hour’s detour, best in the morning.
- Pärnu, almost exactly halfway: the beach, the old Tallinn Gate and lunch.
- The red sandstone cliffs at Veczemji on the Vidzeme coast: a 20-minute leg-stretch close to the main road.
Each stop is priced by the time you spend there, and the driver waits with the car and your luggage.
Price and booking
Prices are for the whole vehicle with driver, not per person. A direct transfer without stops costs from €355 for a car with up to three passengers, booked in the booking form. The trip with stops starts from €417 for a car with up to three passengers, including the shortest stop. You see the final price before paying, and companies receive a VAT invoice. Frequently asked questions
Do we have to make a stop?
The trip on our Riga - Tallinn page includes at least one sightseeing stop. If you only need to get from A to B, write to us and we will quote a direct transfer by distance.
Can we start in Tallinn?
Yes. The trip runs in both directions at the same price, and the driver collects you anywhere in Tallinn, including the port and the airport.
What if our ferry or flight arrives late?
When we collect you from a ferry or an airport, we follow the arrival time and adjust the pick-up. You do not need to call us about a delay.
Do children need car seats?
Yes. In Latvia children below 150 cm must travel in a child seat or booster, and we use the same rule for the whole trip. Tell us the ages when you book and we bring the right seats.
